MAYFL History
In January of 2004 a group of like minded individuals met for the first time in an effort to establish a new unlimited weight football league to fill a void in the local community. As a result of that meeting, Metro Atlanta Youth Football League was started. The orginal members at the first meeting were Central Dekalb Jaguars, Redan Raiders, and South Dekalb Saints.
Word quickly spread of the mission and direction of the new league and shortly after the first meeting, East Point Bulldogs joined the new league. As the league began taking form, Sharon Davis was elected as the first MAYFL Commissioner. Adrian Carney was elected as the first Deputy-Commissioner and Valister Wilson was elected as the first Football Commissioner. Those three were also the three persons to spearhead the first meeting.
As word spread and the anticipation of great things increased, Old National Knights decided to leave their established league to join the newly formed MAYFL. Being a cornerstone of the old Southern Crescent Football league, the departure of Old National, lead to the demise of that league. And with that, Ben Hill Tigers, Cascade Wolverines, Fairburn Flames, and Welcome All Panthers all petitioned and joined MAYFL.
Later that spring, Grace Heritage and Ray of Hope both joined MAYFL to complete the eleven park roster for the initial season. In its first season of existance, MAYFL became the second largest youth football league in Atlanta before they kicked off the first ball.
In 2005, MAYFL expanded to 14 associations and over 100 football teams. Thru some additions and some contraction, MAYFL now stands at 17 associations and over 130 football teams in only its 5th year of existance. There have been many start up unlimited leagues that have tried to emulate the success that MAYFL has experienced with no success.
Now, MAYFL is known as one of the more established and most competitive youth football league in Atlanta, even though we are only in our 5th year.
